#4 – 1 Peter and Pliny’s Letter to Trajan
Around 112 AD, Pliny the Younger (governor of the Roman province of Bithynia) wrote corresponded with Emperor Trajan (110-17 AD) about how to prosecute Christians that had been handed over to him. Even though Pliny’s correspondence is about decades after 1 Peter had been written, it sheds light how early Christians faced official persecution, why, and how they responded.
Read Pliny’s Correspondence with Trajan.
(a) Summarize in your own words what is said about early Christian practices and beliefs. (And remember this is highly important historically because this is a non-Christian saying these things.)
(b) Summarize how Pliny treated those that were accused of Christians… what things did he demand that they do?… and how did he treat those who did or didn’t do what he demanded?
Read 1 Peter 4:12-19.
(c) Summarize in your own words how Christians were expected to respond to persecution.
