I think that the war on drugs has had an incredibly negative impact on society, especially on black Americans. I think that there have been far too many arrests and incarcerations because of small amounts of controlled substances, such as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamines. Because of these reasons, I do think that this country should follow in Oregon’s footsteps and decriminalize small amounts of drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamines. However, I would like for there to be some stipulations to this agreement. For me personally to vote for some thing like this it would need to be accompanied by other changes. For example, I would only vote to decriminalize small amounts of drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamines if there was an accompanying increase in penalty for those selling these drugs in large quantities. I would also only vote to decriminalized small amounts of drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamines if instead of jail time, people found a small amount of these drugs were made to participate in some kind of recovery program, whether that would be rehab, narcotics anonymous, drug classes, etc. (and with this, some kind of required leave for employers so anyone who needs to, for instance, spend time in rehab won’t lose their jobs). One danger of decriminalization that I can imagine is an increase in addictions. These drugs are extremely addictive, which means that more people who try these drugs the more people who will be addicted. Decriminalizing these drugs could make people believe that these drugs are not that bad, and cause more people, especially young people, to start trying to use for fun. So decriminalization could cause people who never considered even trying these drugs now into addicts. One benefit of decriminalization is that less people will be in prison when they don’t need to be.

Although I can see where some could find it difficult to comprehend, I do believe it would more beneficial to follow in Oregon’s footsteps instead of normal tendencies we have had concerning drugs in past years. I believe the biggest reason in adopting these new ideals is to lower the amount of people we incarcerate. Currently and in the past we have over criminalized the use of minor drugs and our prisons are constantly over populated as a result, creating more fit punishments and giving people other options could significantly reduce the number of incarcerated people. Additionally, I, along with many others, do not believe jail time to be the most effective way to deal with drug abusers. As stated in the video, if a person does not want to quit drugs, then they won’t, but giving them other options such as self help and medical attention would be much more effective. There could be several dangers to the decriminalization of drugs, such as an increased amount of drug offenders and making it much easier to find these drugs. Additionally, there could potentially be loopholes which allow not only the users, but those distributing the drugs to find ways out of punishment such as what has happened in Oregon with the passing of new laws. Although this route could present some risks, I believe the benefits outweigh them, some of which being making it easier to find and treat people and find punishments more suited for the crime. My opinions more so align with those of Dr. Andy Seaman for many reasons, first of which is the idea that we have been trying to deal with these problems the same way for the past 50 years so what would it hurt to try something else. I also believe that his idea of attempting to help drug abusers rather than punishing them would be much more effective.
