Data Collection and Organization
From the website that you selected, gather data about your own city
or town (if such data is not available, then select the closest city to
your location). Take note of the monthly averages in precipitation
and/or the number of rainy days indicated. Keep track of the data you
are collecting using a spreadsheet, handwritten notes, or any other
type of organizational tool. Then, choose another location in the
United States or across the globe and repeat the process.
Graphic Representation
After you have completed your data collection, compare and contrast
the precipitation data using an appropriate form of graphic
representation. For suggestions on types of graphs to use, visit the
website below, or find your own resources that provide information
about graphing tools and techniques.

When completed, prepare a written response in which you do the
following:
• Describe the ideas that you have for using ocean buoy data in
your classroom. Include an explanation of how this type of
resource, and the data it provides, will help students build an
understanding of concepts related to Earth’s water systems.
• Explain the type of data that you collected related to
precipitation, including a description of how you organized the
data.
• Explain what type of graphical representation you chose to
compare and contrast the data that you collected. Justify your
choice. Submit your data collection sheet and your graphical
representation as part of your Assignment response.
• Describe insights that you gained about Earth’s water cycle
through the analysis of precipitation data.
• Describe how your students might benefit by engaging in this
type of experience. What challenges might you face as
students learn to conduct scientific explorations that involve
collecting, organizing, and graphing data? How might you overcome these challenges?
**Your Assignment should be 2–3 pages in length, not including the
title page or reference page. (Note: Do not make your graphic too
large. Approximately one-third of a page is an adequate size for your
graph.)
