To integrate faith (wherever you are in your unique faith journey) and learning, i.e., academic studies (building critical thinking skills) with the walk of faith (hermeneutical appropriation for faithful Christian living), students are required to submit a well-written 4 page typed reflection paper that articulates a clear understanding of the content of selected assigned readings. It should also reflect on your context of interpretation in relation to the issues raised in this material.
Reflection Paper #1 will involve the article “Social Locations” by David Rhoads and the Introduction & chapters 1-2 from De La Torre’s book, Reading the Bible from the Margins. (The link to the article by Rhoads is found in the Week 2 Readings page in this week’s module.)
NOTE: While it is recommended that you read all of De La Torre’s book, only the Introduction and chapters 1-2 are required for this assignment.
Follow the guidelines below.
Reflection Paper Guide:
Page 1 and 2
List important quotes and excerpts from your reading.
Single-spaced.
Use one blank line to separate quotes.
Use APA citations.
Page 3 and 4
Write your reflections on the quotes and excerpts you selected in pages 1 and 2. While you may bring up specific quotes/excerpts, the goal here is mainly to reflect on them as a whole.
Double-spaced
Avoid summarizing the readings
Focus writing on how the biblical texts and excerpts affect your ideas, possible faith journey, and life experience in the future.
A reflection paper gives you the opportunity to add your thoughts and analysis to what you have read and experienced. You may reference additional sources from your own experience in this section, but this is not required.
Aim to show depth of thought in your writing. Show your understanding of the concepts in the reading. In other words, this reflection paper should be both text-oriented (what you observed in the texts) and reader-oriented (what you experienced personally). Do not write in generalities! Never simply say, “I enjoyed the reading.” Always tell explain why! Be specific in your discussion
