To increase your understanding of young children’s acquisition and use of early language and literacy skills, the focus of your field experience in an approved setting will be on how children use language with each other as well as with adults to identify literacy opportunities offered in the classroom. During this interaction try to make it more interactive so it seems more natural to have an adult nearby; such as sit on the floor or area where the children are interacting. Make contact and attempt to engage in the activity.
Plan to spend time at your approved setting as follows:
Interaction 1: Child Directed Play (minimum of 15 minutes) Listen for and describe the interests of children through their conversation. Determine the levels of language the children were expressing.
Interaction 2: Child/Adult Relationship (minimum of 15 minutes) Listen and observe children during a different activity, one where they will an opportunity to interact with adults in the room. Again, to not make the interaction unobtrusive make your presence inclusive.
Collaborative Conversation: Have a conversation with the classroom teacher:
What language assessment practices do they use?
How do you plan for and implement early intervention strategies for students who have language delays?
What interventions/strategies do you use to support your English Language Learners.
How do learn about the language/literacy in students’ home and how do you use that information to plan for and support learning in your learning activities?
Write down and capture everything you see and hear during that time!
You will need to include your notes as part of your paper to support your statements within your paper.
ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS
In an APA paper include the following: (minimum of 4 pages)
INTRODUCTION:

Date and time of visit
Teachers’ name(s)
The number and ages of children in the class and the number of teachers/adults present.
Interaction 1: Child Directed Play
Listen for and describe the interests of children through their conversation.

Use the CA Preschool Foundations Volume 1 Language and Literacy section, and ELD section (if applicable) to describe the children’s level of mastery in at least four standards of your choice. The Early Language and Literacy Standards are on pages 55-70. The English Language Development Standards are on pages 112-136.

Collabortaive Conversation with the teacher
Evaluate the methods used for assessments of the children’s language skills in relation to your content learning or course work.
Examine the teacher’s early intervention strategies for language delays and suggest additional research-based strategies.
Analyze the ELL support strategies implemented and analyze the effectiveness.
Justify how the strategies are connected to the encouragement of language and literacy learning at home.
Reflection: What did you learn about literacy opportunities in the classroom? Submit your written assignment and your notes.
