A coach and a team often do this with the uniform and the Mascot. The coach emphasizes winning the game. While diversity is valuable, the goal of winning the game as a team is on center stage. The most prominent issue is bringing everyone together in a united front with a key goal in mind. Everyone must be on the same team. The military does this by emphasizing survival.
Many have said that the United States was brought together better after 9/11 than any time in memorable history. The thought of being under attack and the need to unify overshadowed any differences at the time.
There was once a manager who worked in a large Trade office in Washington. She happened to notice that during lunch managerial members would sit at tables with what was described as a self-identified demographic group. She noticed that this behavior tended to be replicated by example throughout the organization. She saw tables with black males under 40, other tables with white males under 30, tables with white females under 30 and tables with white females over 40. She saw tables with Hispanics of various age groups. She decided that she would require all personnel to engage in an experiment. The participants were instructed to enter the lunch room and select a marble from a jar where the marble was not visible until it was selected. Each marble was colored red, blue, yellow, orange, green, purple, or black. She color coded the tables within the lunch room with a sheet of paper that matched the colors of the marbles. She instructed the participants to sit at tables where the colored marbles matched the tables. This experiment lasted 30 days. In 30 days she was able to break down the original demographic groupings and reorient the managers to a cross pollination process.
Member managers were exchanging ideas, going to parties at one another’s homes etc. She saw young black males attending retirement parties for 65 year old white females. She saw older white males attending baby showers for Hispanic females. She saw a 30% increase in active development and an increase in performance. Personnel disciplinary actions were reduced by 36% in the first quarter after the experiment.
