It’s time to start your research!
SNC1D Culminating Task
Step 1: You will collect initial research about your ecological issue and the impact it has
on an ecosystem. When you are done, you will have approximately one page of point form notes about your topic in your notebook (it can be more, if you find good information). You will also have a list of sources (websites) at the bottom of your notes.
Use the questions below to guide your research. You do not need to answer each question, just use them as a guide.
• What is the main environmental issue?
• Which ecosystem is affected? Describe it in detail.
• Who is responsible for the damage?
• Who and what is affected by the ecological (environmental) issue?
• Are there any statistics to help explain why this is an issue?
• What are the short-term effects of this issue?
• What are the possible long-term effects of this issue?
• Are other ecosystems affected as well?
• Other facts you come across about the issue and the ecosystem.
Step 2: When you have your page of research complete, use it to create your blog post.

Now you will research some of the limiting factors that impact your chosen ecosystem of concern. Your environmental issue will impact some populations in your ecosystem. When you have completed your research, create a blog post describing the effect of human activity on the limiting factors and how they impact the carrying capacity for
some living things in your ecosystem. Your post could be written, an audio recording, or other media. Any media created can be posted on your blog.
For example, if I were studying the mining of the Alberta Oil Sands, I could research how much water is used to extract bitumen from the Oil Sands. I would learn that the process uses a large quantity
of water and only some of it is recovered. This reduces the water available in nearby ecosystems. In this case, if we are looking at aquatic wildlife such as a species of fish, the carrying capacity of the ecosystem would be limited by the amount of water available. So, the limiting factor would be water.
Success Criteria:
• I included a description of how at least one living thing is impacted by the human activity.
• I described how the human activity affects some of the limiting factors for this living thing.
• I described how the limiting factors impact the carrying capacity of the ecosystem for this living thing.

After you have found the person in your community that you would choose to help you understand your ecological issue, create a blog post about them.
Answer the following questions in the composition of your post:
• Who in your physical/online community would be able to support you with learning more about your environmental concern?
• What is their connection to the environmental concern?
• What made you select this expert to possibly be part of your consulting team?

Dr. O’Connor is raising international awareness of high cancer rates he observed in Fort
Chipewyan, a First Nations community north of the Oil Sands.
I selected this expert because he was recently fired by the Nunee Health Board Society where he worked for 16 years. He has direct experience in the community and knows of the medical concerns due to the Oil Sands in Northern Alberta.

Sands are hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen
The reason I believe each of these elements are connected to the Alberta Oil Sands are as follows:
Hydrogen is part of water molecules. Bitumen is a mixture of sand and heavy crude oil which is extracted by injecting superheated water into from the oil sands. It is this that is then processed/ refined and used throughout society.
Oxygen – is also found in water molecules. Water is needed to extract Bitumen from which oil is made. Carbon dioxide is released during oil sands operations. Carbon dioxide contains both the elements is
both carbon and oxygen
Helium is found in natural gas. Natural gas is burned to heat the water used in the extraction of
Sulphur is emitted into the environment when the operation of burning natural gas is performed to heat the water to extract bitumen

As you’ve learned, astronauts have varied experiences including multiple subject areas and backgrounds. Choose one astronaut (either one of the ones already mentioned or a different one) who may be able to help you brainstorm solutions to protect or restore your ecological issue. Write a blog post explaining why, or inviting your astronaut to come and help you
problem solve the ecological issue. Explain why this particular astronaut’s expertise and background may help you find solutions to your ecological issue. Identify three Transferable Skills that this astronaut would possess and explain how this would benefit them in their career.
For example: If I were studying oil extraction from the Alberta Oil Sands I may choose Dr. Jennifer Sidey, a Canadian astronaut. I would explain in my blog post that I chose her to help me brainstorm solutions for making the Oil Sands more environmentally friendly because she has worked extensively in the area of flames within internal combustion engines (and how to make them create fewer pollutants). She has also worked in the area of conventional and alternative energy production. This experience would help me in understanding the Alberta Oil Sands and how to assess the pollutants being created and to help me think of new ways of processing the Oil Sands.

In this blog post you will write a letter or post about a topic around energy creation that connects to your ecological issue.
This assignment will require research to find a topic and then additional research to
help you gather more information about your topic in order to develop good pieces of evidence to support your opinion. You may find newspaper articles to help you get started.
Your supporting arguments must be
• factual.
• clearly explained.
• related directly to your opinion.
• supported using more than one point.
Typically, a full answer to an opinion question requires 3–5 pieces of support. You want the audience to take your opinion seriously. You might even complete a cost-benefit analysis before writing your letter.
Success Criteria:
• I stated my opinion on an issue around energy production clearly.
• I provided 3–5 pieces of support to my opinion that are factual, clearly explained, related to my opinion.
• I explained the environmental, social, or economic impact of my opinion.
• My writing could be understood by readers of my blog (classmates or peers).

Here is where you get to make the decisions. If you had the money, time, power, and resources that you needed to make things better for your ecosystem issue, what would you do? What things could be done to either lessen or reverse the effects of human impact on your ecosystem? What initiatives should be started or developed further?
Create a blog post (written or media) that tries to convince people that your idea or initiative
will work. Use scientific research or information to explain WHY this will work to improve the ecosystem. How does your solution take into account the needs of the people who have been causing the impact on the ecosystem. Why will they be convinced to stop? What is the alternative for them? How can they still get what they need? What will make this alternative solution viable to them?
For this post be creative, you must defend your ideas. This means you can dream big – and be a bit unrealistic (your solution doesn’t have to be perfectly possible), but provide evidence as to WHY you think it would work. The WHY is more important than the solution presented.
Success Criteria:
• My blog post is engaging and can be understood by my peers.
• I have explained my suggested course of action.
• I have included reasons why people would buy into this and make changes.
• I have included any necessary requirements of this solution – government policies, lobbying of governments, new environmental groups, money invested somewhere for a certain amount of time.
• I have included how I foresee this action improving the ecosystem.
• I have included scientific facts or information to back up why my suggested solution may work.
If I were studying the Alberta Oil Sands, I may choose to write about a radical solution I create that includes the government working with oil companies to develop a method to purify tailings ponds and forcing them to catch up on cleaning up these tailings ponds before they work on extracting more oil. This would require research into the current methods of cleaning up tailings ponds and the impact
of these on the environment. My solution that I present would have to explain that this would require very strong government policies, because this solution would be very unpopular among people and companies working in the Oil Sands and surrounding areas. I would also explain how this work would improve the ecosystem around the Athabasca River. I would have to research some of the economic impact of the Oil Sands on Alberta’s (and Canada’s) economy.
