Nursing communications can take many forms from verbal to facial expressions and body language. Self-awareness will allow you to examine your attitude, as well as facial expressions and mannerisms. By being aware of how others may perceive our non-verbal communications may allow us to avoid a patient mistaking a sigh as you are uninterested in their problems or annoyed by their presence. “Nursing communication is vital to quality and safe nursing care. We use many different forms of communication in my Emergency Department. Some of the basic forms include a daily huddle which can be verbal, or a memo posted that is read and signed off. We use EPIC ASAP in the ED, and it has a sticky note that you use for FYI type information. We also have a direct chat feature which lets you communicate with a single person or the whole treatment team. For general information email is also using to distribute information. The most used communication is the SBAR report used at shift change and if patient is sent to the floor or transferred to another facility. Poor communication between nurses and/or other healthcare providers can lead to vital information not being acted on. This can have disastrous and sometimes deadly consequences (Beckett, & Kipnis, G., 2009).
