We as nurses have a tremendous amount of responsibility when it comes to patient care, and despite the multiple demands on nurse’s time, taking a few minutes to create an intimate moment with your clients for clear communication and develop a connection is vital.

Working as a nurse over the years, I have been able to refine and build confidence in my communication skills, and to be honest the best resource I use to improve my awareness of communication are the same patients I have served. My population of clients are mostly multiracial. I work with Asian, African American, and Hispanic population, so first I had to learn to be culturally aware. With the help of my patients, I’ve learned that the older Hispanic and African American population is hesitant to speak up or question the doctor’s plan of care. They usually wait until the doctor leaves the room and then they will ask the nurse all the questions. I’ve learned to tell the patient ahead of time, to write down some questions to ask the doctor as it facilitates and opens the dialogue between patient and doctor. “Communication is the means by which people influence the behavior of others, and thus it is crucial in successful outcome of nursing interventions.” (Balzer-Riley, 2017).

We have a team building skills day at work. We take this time to talk about our personal goals, what are the best and worst part of our job. The overall goal was to better understand each other so we can communicate better. “Sometimes the failure of professionals to collaborate is because they lack the skills necessary to contribute to effective teamwork” (Masters, 2020). The most effective communication skills that a nurse can bring, I feel it’s demonstrating warmth to all, being specific, and ask questions. These are important factors because we spend most of our days together. Being kind and warm to each other is essential, we can’t have a team of annoyed co-workers run a clinic. We need to clearly communicate and be specific to all pending matters, be the example to show care and urgency to our patients as you would a family member. “The key to effective collaboration among an inter professional team is the building of relationships among all members that reflect trust and respect” (Masters, 2020).
