Films, music and books are part of our culture and therefore reflect many of the issues that affect our society. You have noticed thus far this semester I have included a song with some topics. These songs all have something to say about how people feel and think. I hope that you enjoyed listening to them.
This week’s assignment is to watch a popular film but view it through a sociological lens instead of just watching for entertainment. I want you to take notes during the film so that you can answer the questions that I have listed below.
LIST OF FILMS
Most of these are available on NETFLIX or VUDU. I have also borrowed them from the College library or my local library for free.
Hidden Figures – gender discrimination, racism
Monsters Inc – Prejudice, Gender Inequality
Bicentennial Man – prejudice, technology
Philadelphia – AIDS, homophobia
Great Debaters – Discrimination, Prejudice
Nine to Five – Gender Inequality, Prejudice
Milk – Homophobia, AIDS, mental health
K-Pax – charismatic leader, mental health issues
The Secret Life of Bees – racism, discrimination, gender bias
This is NOT a film review paper it is a reaction paper. This must be in YOUR OWN WORDS, you may refer to specific characters when answering these questions, but do NOT tell me the whole film plot. You will lose points if you do.
Pay attention to what topics, concepts, and terminology we have discussed in class that are brought up in this movie? Look through the text to be inclusive. Be specific.
Terminology: what terms and concepts that you have learned from this class can you see in this film? HINT: ethnocentrism, slavery, culture, socialization, mental health, illness, injustice, social construction or reality, etc. Use these terms as you give examples from the film.
Which sociological perspectives can you see in the film? Remember two of these are from a MACRO perspective (conflict theory, functionalism) which is from the societal level. Symbolic interactionism = micro level.
Choose one issue (racism, homophobia, gender bias, etc.) from the film and explain it from each perspective, functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interaction.
Did you gain some insight from the film? If so, what?
Would you recommend it to others? Why, why not? Be specific.
This paper must be at least 500 words.
