Turning Clues into an Interpretive Framework: Outlining a Response to Your Rhetorical Question
An interpretive framework (or “explanatory scheme”) is an outline that anticipates the needs of readers. It nutshells for readers the explanatory or conceptual schema that the critic has developed to address a given research question. When grounded in warranted artifact-method inferential claims, an interpretive framework forwards the justification for that explanation, thereby answering the questions, “Where are we going?” and “What do we have to go on?” (Foss 25).
As Foss explains, an effective interpretive framework presents findings as a “united whole” (25). It leverages top-level (or topic) sentences in the service of the inferences the critic has drawn to support the coherence of this interpretive framework (25).
Building on the work you’ve been doing for this module, now tell the story you’re on the cusp of discovering. That is, compose a coherent interpretive framework of your explanatory (or conceptual) scheme to address your research question.
Begin by framing your interpretive framework in response to your research question, the a) general version followed by a b) specific version.
Next, use an analytical process such as the one that Foss describes in “Report of the Findings of the Analysis” (20-21) to craft sentences to serve as the framework’s top-level findings within the unified whole of your interpretive framework. (Please put these findings in bold.) Note that these findings work together to answer your research question. As Foss suggests, consider exploiting the grammatical structure of these sentences to build the framework’s coherence.

Then reference claims from Phase 3 to show how they support this framework. This can be as simple as “(See Claim #x). (You’ll notice that the sample uses hyperlinks but this is simply to illustrate to you the connections between Phase 3 and Phase 4.
Contribution to Rhetorical Theory: Finally conclude with a culminating paragraph that articulates for readers the value of your interpretive framework. Step back from the specific artifact to answer the research question more generally and abstractly. As Foss puts it: “transcend the specific data of your artifact to focus on the rhetorical processes with which you are concerned” (21).
