Cite the author’s full name, essay’s title, and the essay’s thesis in the first sentence.

Remain neutral and make no judgments; should state the facts.
After mentioning the author’s full name in the first sentence, refer to him or her by last name only or by pronoun throughout the remainder of the essay.
The last sentence of the first paragraph should be the thesis.
Paragraphs Two, Three, and Four should serve as the response, which is a critique or evaluation of the author’s essay.
If essay both agrees and disagrees with author, the body paragraphs should address the points that you agree or disagree by examining the essay’s strengths and weaknesses in reasoning and logic, in quality of supporting examples, and in organization and style. Response should be persuasive and should cite facts, examples, and personal experience that either refutes or supports the essay you are responding to, depending upon stance.
Remember: Refer to the author in each topic sentence
Body paragraph topic sentences should also express response to a specific idea from the author. Every sentence within the body paragraph should support this response.
To maintain focus, regularly reference the author throughout the body paragraphs.
At least one quote from the essay must be utilized.
Paragraph Five should return to the thesis and provide reader with other insights about the essay’s purpose. The conclusion should tie together the main points made by the essay’s author as well as the one’s points made throughout the assignment.
Extra Tips: Make your essay interesting and opinionated!
Use critical thinking to analyze the author’s argument and the response.
Focus on the facts and let them guide the opinion, not the other way around.
Use an open mind. Conceding a point does not weaken the stance.
Vary sentence structure.
Proofread the essay!
Use the control key (ctrl-f) to find uses of “you.”
