Monitor your media usage for a week to determine the types of media you interact
Monitor your media usage for a week to determine the types of media you interact with, how much time you spend, and what impact it has on
For one week, track all your media usage, within reason. Every time you watch TV, listen to the radio, use your cell phone or the Internet, use a social-networking site, play video games or other form of media, write down these key important details listed below. Track your usage. Some of your iPhones track your general usage on your phone but I am asking you to get more detailed on what specifically you are doing in media and specifically what are the effects on you.
For example, if I watched four hours of YouTube travel channels last night specifically the Bucket List Family vlogs, I would identify that and specify how it impacted me emotionally, physically, and psychologically. For example, when I watched them I was inspired, aspirational, stronger desire to travel, feel a bit depressed in my daily life that I am not traveling as much as I’d like, feel anxious that they are better parents than I am, oftentimes I feel relaxed when I watch them, sometimes I cry and tear up at certain scenes with beautiful musical montages, etc. That is just one example of one media interaction I had during my long week of tracking. I would look at the specific media interactions I had and determine how it impacted me emotionally, physically, and psychologically overall through the week
Track media use on paper (or your phone) throughout the week:
What medium are you using (i.e. TV, radio, video games, cell phone, Internet, etc.)? Be specific
How much time did you spend on each interaction
What were you doing on that medium (i.e. emailing friends, surfing the Internet for fun, be specific!)
How did you feel during and after that media usage?
Identify emotional effects (i.e. happy, sad, anxious, depressed, stressed, negative, positive)
Identify physical effects (i.e. Did you hold your breath, did it make you hungry, did you sweat, did your heart rate increase or decrease?)
Identify psychological effects (i.e. Were you transported into the narrative? Do you feel like you know the characters known as para-relationships? Did it make you scared or nervous? Did it make you understand yourself and others better?)
Once the week is done, make a pie chart or bar graph (you can do this by hand with markers or crayons, or use Excel or other software to make a graph) that shows the types of media you use (i.e. YouTube, Canvas, Twitter, TV, Pandora, etc.) and make that graph reflective of how much time you spent in that medium as compared to the others (i.e. 50% YouTube, 40% Canvas for online school work, 5% Twitter, 3% TV, and 2% Pandora, as an example). In other words, let the graph show how much of your time is being used in what mediums you use. You need to determine that by looking at the weeklong tracking you did that showed what mediums you used and how much time you spent in that medium. You will add up all the categories to get total amount of time spent. That graph should be included in your assignment.
Use this information as a catalyst to write an introspective and analytical paper.
Write an insightful analytical paper (approximately 1200 words) on your experience and revelations you had about your media diet, how it changes the way you live your life and effects on you. It can be a positive review or one that identifies negatives that you experienced from your media use.
You must consider emotional, physical, and psychological effects you experienced including Transportation Theory, para-relationships, mirror neurons and other phenomenon. You must analyze what you experienced and why that happened to you. Be sure to answer why you felt such effects using research as evidence. For example, if I felt depressed every time I binged watched TV for 10 hours, I would cite research from an academic study that proves that too much information overload and overactive mirror neurons have exhausted my body due to the uptick in adrenaline and cortisol, etc.
Include four academic sources in your paper to back up your claims. Be sure to cite all research. Write a well-constructed You can use first-person writing using words like me, I, or mine to expound on your personal experiences. Be sure to state concepts from research and cite them accordingly as this is an analytical academic paper.
Follow this order for your paper (do not write the paper in outline form but follow this outline for headlines and sections of your paper. This is the flow your paper should take.)
