Paper # I
1. In The Poetics Aristotle writes “Since the objects that the imitators represent are persons engaged in action, and since these persons will necessarily be persons of either a higher or lower (inferior) moral type … they represent them accordingly as either better than we are or worse, or about the same” (1448a) …“The best object of comic imitation, however, is not any kind of fault, but the ridiculous (or inferior), which is a type of “ugly” (Poetics (1449a33-34) (Norton Edition, 1982).
Considering the above definition of “persons engaged in action,” in what way is Socrates from The Golden Ass “inferior”? Discuss.
In developing this paper, make sure to briefly explain what it means to be “inferior” by referring to what Aristotle and Kitano say about it. Throughout the paper make sure to include at least three examples, or pieces of evidence, of Socrates being “inferior.”
Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics’ excerpt from Book IV (section 8), Masahiro Kitano’s explanation of “Aristotle’s Theory of Comedy, and Pico della Mirandola views of human beings will help you better understand, and articulate Socrates’ “inferior” condition.
