This week, you will build upon what you learned aboutneurons and how they communicate with one another. Whereas before you identified the structural components of neural communication, this week’s assignment is to describe how communication occurs.
To that end, create a PowerPoint presentation for a freshman-level biology class describing how neurons communicate electrically and chemically.
The presentation must address two topics – chemical and electrical communication. In the first part of the presentation, discuss chemical communication between the pre and post-synaptic cell. Be sure to include info about how neurotransmitters are synthesized and released and how they bind with receptors. In the 2nd part, discuss the electrical part of neural communication. Here you will describe what impact the neurotransmitter has on the post-synaptic cell on affecting the polarization of the neuron and how this electrical signal is propagated down the axon of the neuron.
The presentation should be driven by figures and illustrations, with appropriate speaker notes on each slide to explain the selected illustrations.
Length: 8-10 slides with 50-100 words of notes per slide.
