Overview
This is an exercise in understanding the qualitative data collection process.
Action Items
1. Make sure you studied the resources listed in the Module 1 Preparation.
2. Collect personal data for at least 4 consecutive days by tracking down something you do in your everyday life. Here are some examples of what you might include:
o How many times you said “thank you” during these days and to whom. You can notate that in a notebook with a line and the name of the person you said thank you.
o Food you ate during these days, by writing down every single thing you ate
o Hugs you give during these days and to whom
o Every time you complain and what you complained about
o Every time you felt happy and what you felt happy about
o Every door you opened during these days
o The clothes you wore
o Every time you laughed
o Every time you sent a text message and to whom
o Every time you wrote and what you wrote about
o Things you read
o The music you listened to
o Anything else you can think of. The possibilities are endless!
3. Once the data is collected, attempt to visualize it by putting it together in context (either a chart, a hand-drawing, or anything else where you display the data you have collected).
4. Write a paragraph of what you concluded from this mini data collection and submit it, including your figure, table, or chart, and the actual data you collected in its raw form.
Please note:
1. The student clearly demonstrates an understanding of how data is collected. The work is systematic.
2. The visualization (either chart, hand-drawing, table, or any other form, portrays the data collection.
