ASSIGNMENT:
In an organized and well-supported essay (2½ – 5 pages), choose one of the following topics. In your discussion,
support your opinions with evidence from the poems (quotations and in-text citations). Failure to provide
quotations and in-text citations or to write the required length is an automatic zero.
Topic 1: Explain the parent-child relationships in Homer: King Priam and Hecktor (The Iliad) and Odysseus
and Telemachus (The Odyssey).
Topic 2: The Iliad is filled with violence and death. Why does Homer use war to explain how we live – we the
people and our choices?
Topic 3: Discuss the theme of hospitality in Odysseus’ visit with the Phoenicians.
Please copy or type the topic at the top of your essay.
1. MLA MANUSCRIPT FORMAT
• Times New Roman 12 font
• Pagination in upper right corner in the header area
• Double-spacing
• MLA Heading in left corner of the page – not in header area
• ½ inch indent for first line of each new paragraph
• No extra spaces between paragraphs or other sections; maintain double-spacing.
• One-inch margins
• Left Margin justification (no center or Justified margins)
• Review “Sample MLA First Page.”
• Essays missing correct MLA document format will lose 10 points automatically.
2. Your essay must be 2 ½ – 5 pages, follow MLA format, have an original title, an introduction, three body
paragraphs, and a conclusion. Quotations and in-text citations are required. Without them, the grade on
the assignment is a zero.
3. Quotations from the poem(s) that support your ideas and in-text citations acknowledging book, line, and
page numbers are required. Without them, the paper is an opinion, not an analysis, and the grade on the
assignment is an automatic zero. In-text citations must provide book, line, and page numbers from the
poem posted in Canvas – the only source allowed for writing the essay. I must be able to locate the
information. Using sources outside Canvas is an automatic zero on the paper.
4. For adequate development, you should provide 2 quotations from the poem(s) in each body paragraph to
2
back up your ideas. Block quotes are not encouraged.
5. Failure to write the required minimum length is an automatic grade of zero on the assignment.
6. Paraphrasing is not allowed – for your protection. The risks of plagiarism are too great.
7. Do not divide your essay into sections that are labeled / set off, such as Introduction, Reason or
Point 1, Reason 2, Reason 3, and Conclusion. Follow the 5-paragraph, thesis-controlled essay format. For
more information, review “How to Write the 5-Paragraph Essay.”
8. The essay exam should be a serious, scholarly paper where your gut feelings and personal preferences
play very little role. This is the time to show off your analytical skills, rather than strictly your emotions.
This is a formal paper, and you should avoid using first and second-person pronouns, such as I, me, my,
mine, you, your, and yours. (Instead, you might think about using the reader or readers.)
9. When you have finished writing your paper:
• Click “Submit Assignment,” a bright gold link in the upper right corner of the screen and upload your
essay as an attachment. If you worked with the tutors, you should upload a second file with the tutor’s
notes / recommendations.
10. Help Writing the Essay: Excellent resources are posted in Canvas to help you write a literary
analysis. For example, “Tips for Writing Reader Responses and Essays” provides guidelines and sample
student papers.
