Essay instructions:
You’re building up your close reading chops and learning how to talk and think critically about literature. For your second major writing assignment this semester you will be writing a researched essay. This assignment will be staged- meaning that we are going to be working on it throughout the semester from the proposal, through drafts, and peer-response activities. Your essay should be about 1500 words (5-6 pages in length) and should focus on one of the topics below OR a topic you choose in consultation with Dr. Klages-Bombich. Your essay must cite both the primary source (the text(s) you are focusing on) and 3-5 secondary sources offering contextual and interpretive support for your argument. You must use actual quotations from texts (both your primary text and secondary ones), in MLA format, and you must have a Works Cited page (which doesn’t count to your final word count). Select one of the poets we read this semester (Zobitz, Effiong, Acevado, Choi or Salgado) and select one longer work or up to three short works by that author, ones that are not listed on the syllabus, to analyze and discuss in your essay. Your essay should be a close, critical analysis of the work or works. The paper should be making an argument about the work or works that represents your interpretation and is supported with textual evidence.
Sweat (2015) by Lynn Nottage deals with the effects that factory closing have on the lives of American workers. Develop an argument that addresses either class and race as it is used in the play or one that discusses the attainability of the “American Dream” in 21st century America. Revisit the short story. We’ve read several short stories this semester. Select either two short stories from the course pack and develop an argument where you compare stories along the same thematic lines OR select a second short story by an author that we’ve read and compare two of their short stories making an argument for how you believe we should be interpreting the authors work.
