Documented research Essay 1 should be three-and-a-half to four (3.5 – 4.0 ) full pages in length (with an additional Works Cited page) with:
an introduction with clear thesis statement
body paragraphs
properly introduced and properly cited direct quotations from the text/texts
properly introduced and properly cited direct quotations from one-two (1-2) scholarly literary journal articles (properly cited in MLA)
clear conclusion

Review the Instructions. Proofread your work using the PDFs I placed in “Class Information” to ensure that the quality of your writing meets the standards for a 200-level literature course. I have placed MLA Style and Formatting guides in “Class Information,” which show how to properly format your paper’s heading and how to properly quote. Use these guides. Your essay should be supported by the literature (direct quotations from the narrative, Emerson essay, or Poe short stories, properly introduced and cited using MLA 9th Edition style) and from 1 or two scholarly journal articles only from the list). Again, the paper should be three to three-and-a-half to four (3.5 – 4.0) full pages in length. A separate page will serve as the Works Cited page.
NOTE: In using quotes, please do not use long quotes for short papers–the similarity checker should not go above 25%–if it does, go back and shorten the quote or include more analysis. All papers will be submitted using TurnItIn and other plagiarism filters, which capture uncited sources and instances of plagiarism. Plagiarism results in an “F” on the paper. A second instance of plagiarism results in automatic failure of the course. **************************************************
Per standard composition format:
1. Create your own title for your paper. Capitalize the first letter of the main words in your essay title. Do not title your essay with the same title as the text and/or the author, and do not title it Research Essay 1.
2. Indent paragraphs.
3. Spell the author’s name correctly (Mary Rowlandson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, or Edgar Allan Poe).
4. Use the author’s surname (last name) after mentioning him by full name: Rowlandson, Emerson, or Poe
5. Use proper MLA formatting of the titles of your texts:
Italicize the title of the narrative, like this: Narrative of the Captivity (NO quotation marks, NO bold type, NO all caps, and NO underlining) . Italicize the title of Emerson’s essay, like this: Nature (NO quotation marks, NO bold type, NO all caps, and NO underlining). Use quotation marks only around the titles of the Poe short stories, like this: “The Tell-Tale Heart” “The Black Cat” “The Cask of Amontillado” (NO italics, NO bold type, NO all caps, and NO underlining)
For the scholarly journal articles, make sure that you properly introduce them, noting the FULL NAME of the critic and the FULL TITLE of the article upon first mention. If you use a second or third quote from the same journal article, just use the surname (last name) of the critic. Do not mention the article title again.
Essay Structure:
1. All writing must be double-spaced at 2.0 (not 2.5), with 12 pt. font (not 12.5, 13, or 14). 2. MLA formatted heading (see MLA style sheet).
3. A title for your essay, centered (see MLA style sheet).
4. Clear opening paragraph with thesis statement and signal phrase (mentioning full name of author and title of text).
5. Clear topic sentences.
6. Quotations (properly introduced and cited). Do not use long quotes. Keep the similarity rating to a maximum of 25%. If it exceeds that, try shortening a few quotes and paraphrasing more.
7. Use transitional phrases to move from paragraph to paragraph.
8. Vary your diction (word choice) so that your sentences don’t all begin the same way.
9. Do NOT use ANY dictionary or encyclopedia definitions in your writing–do not write: “The dictionary defines___ as…” or “Webster’s Dictionary defines___ as….”
10. A clear conclusion.
11. A Works Cited page. Do not call it “References” or “Citations.” It is centered at the top and simply titled: Works Cited
Additional Notes on Grammar:
1. You must proofread for sentence structure (sentence fragments, run-ons, comma splices, subject/verb agreement errors, spelling errors, etc.). I uploaded grammar guides to the Moodle Room, and you can also use NetTutor to help you proofread. Or, you can use The Learning Center for tutoring (in-person, on campus or virtual). In addition, use the ETS rater–it will help, but it does not find all errors. It is your responsibility to upload the strongest paper you can.
2. You must use proper punctuation (periods, commas, quotation marks, semicolons, apostrophes, etc.).
3. You must use proper capitalization of words.
4. Again, you must focus on format AND content.
5. Again, please proofread before uploading your work.
USE STANDARD MLA STYLE (see MLA style sheets (especially “MLA Style Sheet for Writing Assignments, Formal, and Documented Research Essays”). A Note on Plagiarism
DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Plagiarism results in an “F” on the paper, and the paper and it cannot be re-done. A second instance of plagiarism results in automatic failure of the course. PLEASE NOTE: Re-wording summaries or analysis from another source, or changing specific nouns, adjectives, adverbs, etc., constitutes plagiarism—your work must consist of YOUR OWN THOUGHTS AND WRITING—please don’t fail this course because of plagiarism. Do not ask to revise plagiarized work. Make sure that you use quotation marks and that you give proper credit to the source if you are paraphrasing.
When you have completed the essay, save a copy in an easily accessible place and upload a copy (Word document or PDF ONLY–do not use Google Docs or Google Drive) through Moodle. NOTE: Late essays will receive a 5% deduction for each day late (uploaded on Mon, 6/6: -5% and papers uploaded on Tues, 6/7: -10%). No essays will be accepted after Tues, June 7. Do not wait until the last moment to upload.
