Anthem is a dystopian novel in much the same vein as The Giver, The Hunger Games and Divergent — an oppressive society, a handful of individuals who question the system, and plans to overthrow the society and create something better. Dystopian stories shine a light on issues that exist or are arising in society and give an idea of what the author feels would be a better approach. Unlike Suzanne Collins or Veronica Roth, Ayn Rand does not show the system being overthown (a storytelling approach she also uses in Atlas Shrugged), but we do see a clear vision of what it will look like, which in turns lets us see Rand’s views on society.
Your assignment is to use Anthem and outside sources (research) to briefly explain how Rand believes society should function in terms of the individual vs the majority. The bulk of your paper will be to argue for or against her ideas.
To help you develop and support your ideas, you need to use material from at least three credible sources in addition to Anthem itself. All sources must be cited and documented according to MLA 8 standards. This means you must have both a separate works cited page (make sure it’s not hanging on to the bottom of a previous page; this is very easy to do in Word and there’s no reason for that kind of sloppy formatting) and in-text citations.
Keep in mind that this is a critical essay and not a general, informative paper. You must be able to apply your findings to the topic and draw a conclusion that will offer your readers a unique insight to the work(s). A good analysis concentrates on details: you should quote portions of the work(s) and your secondary sources to show how the texts support your thesis, but do not drop in long passages, and do not summarize the whole thing. You also need to offer comments and analysis that show how the portion you’re interpreting contributes to the work as a whole. As a general rule, “say more about less”: limit your focus to a small enough topic so that you can cover it in detail in this assignment.
