Speculative Fiction Story & Analysis (Story 5 pages minimum – 10 pages maximum/Story Explanation 1-2 pages max)
Part
1: Choose one of the texts that we have read or watched this semester.
Write a short fiction story that serves either as a prequel, sequel, or
spinoff from that original story. Your story should exist within the
same established universe as the original but should also introduce new
elements and explore new ideas.
Some potential ways to imagine your story:
as a prequel that provides backstory leading up to the original
retelling a part of the original from a different perspective
a spinoff that focuses on a supporting character
picking up the story where the original left off and expanding the hero’s journey
further exploring a place/space that only receives brief attention in the original
following the journey of a symbolic object to a new setting/circumstance
(This is not an exhaustive list and you’re encouraged to explore your own ideas!)
Your story will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Does it build logically from the original story, maintaining continuity with the established rules of that universe?
Does it offer new concepts or insights not explored or only briefly touched upon in the original story?
Does the story demonstrate a clear understanding of the original’s major thematic concerns and/or allegorical implications?
Does
the story demonstrate careful attention to the main elements of
narrative: narration style/p.o.v., setting (time/space/place), language
(tone/diction/sentence structure), characterization, imagery, use of
literary devices (metaphor, personification, symbolism, allusion, etc.),
genre conventions & tropes?
Does the story feature a clear structure that keeps the reader engaged?
Part
2: Once you’ve completed your story, write a 1-2 page explanation that
breaks down how your story connects and builds upon the original. You
want to think of this as defense of what your story offers to someone
who was a fan of the original text. You should also discuss:
challenges you faced when creating your story
what you learned about the original that you hadn’t considered before writing your own
what you learned about the process of speculative fiction storytelling more generally
