Final Integrative Paper for MS708
MCore PLO for Assessment in MS708:
“Conduct social and cultural analysis for the
interpretation of the gospel in contemporary settings”
Method of Assessment:
Final Integrative Paper
Assignment:
Each student will submit a 10-page
paper at the end of class reflecting on the different ways Christians have
theologically attempted to relate Christian faith with other religions, such as
outlined by Paul Knitter in Introducing Theologies of Religion. The
student will also need to integrate knowledge learned from their ethnographic
interview and/or site visit experience, which enhanced their understanding of
interacting with people of other faiths. In other words, this paper will
present the student’s own informed theology of World Religions, but it must be
supported by additional academic resources. Basically,
the student is making a position and defending it with both research and
ethnographic evidence from the interview and site visit.
How we
approach people of other faiths is an extension of our theology. After
having this entire class, and thinking about other World Religions and their
ideas and even taking the time to speak to someone from another faith and/or
visit (even if virtually) a worship service of another faith, what is a
Christian theological response to people of another faith? Some of the
theological questions the student may want to consider are:
Is God at work in
other religions? If so, how? If not, how
do you explain the religious faith and practices of other religions?
How should
Christians explain truth, if any, found in other faiths?
Can God’s
activity in other faiths be salvific, if not, what role does it play?
What is the
purpose of General Revelation?
Can ideas or
practices of other faiths be contextualized into Christianity? Why or why not?
What is the role
of Interfaith dialog and how should Christians be involved?
How should the
Church respond to a pluralistic context in our Postmodern world?
It is also
important to provide scriptural support for the position taken. Examples of
scriptural passages for consideration includes the following:
John 14:1-14
John 10:1-21
1 John 4:1-21
Acts 17:16-34
Romans 1:18-24
Romans 2:12-16
It is expected that the student will
utilize a minimum of five academic resources and present them in a
bibliography. These resources should include at least three academic articles
from peer-reviewed periodicals (not popular resources such as Christianity
Today, etc.). Any Internet resources used must be scholarly. If there is a
question about any resource, check with the professor to see if it is
acceptable. The student will also need to integrate things learned from their
ethnographic interview and/or site visit into their position paper. The final
paper should be double-spaced and use a standard formatting (most types are
acceptable, but be consistent throughout the paper).
This paper will be graded on how
well the student presents their own theology of World Religions and supports their
position from scripture and theological arguments. The
student should be sure to include
how their interactions with people of other faiths for this class have impacted
their theological position.
