You will create a PowerPoint presentation (min 8-10 slides) , covering each of the points described below.
This does not include the introductory slide with the name of the company, website and social media handle.
Description
The recent protests of the summer put a big onus on corporate companies across all sectors to scrutinize their diversity and inclusion policies within the workplace as well as to evaluate whether their branding caters to diverse audiences. Some have embarked on aggressive steps whereas other have not.
For this assignment, you will imagine that you both run a consultancy that specializes in diversity and inclusion. First, identify a particular company brand (Not LSU football).
Find their brand on social media whether it is Facebook or Instagram, and company website.
Imagine that they are your client, and they have approached you to help evaluate how their brand on social media reflects the diversity of their audience, as well as propose possible suggestions of what changes can potentially be made in the workplace that can foster better representation.
For this assignment, you will conduct an initial assessment of their brand, as follows, which you will put together in a PowerPoint presentation with the view that you will be giving a boardroom presentation to your client.
In the presentation, you should draw on some of the concepts that we have discussed this semester, such as cultural hegemony, framing, stereotyping and mention the potential effects on the schema of the audience etc.
Your PowerPoint will consist of the following components:
Section One
An analysis of the content on their Instagram/Facebook page as follows (primarily focus on around 15 posts):
What do you see in terms of their diversity of people? Conduct a mini content analysis (use the categories based on your previous content analysis assignment from module three) and give a percentage of people in terms of gender and race. I don’t need to see the excel sheet. But, I expect to see a one – two slides, which states % of gender; % of race; %. ( E.g. White 25% Black 30% LatinX 10% etc and Female. %. Male %, LGBTQ. % Can’t tell %).
Provide a descriptive analysis, which looks at the following:
How are other categories such as sexual orientation, class, body image, disability, sexuality represented? Include a percentage if necessary.
How is the content presented? For example, are there any particular dominant themes, narratives or qualities to the posts?
Give an analysis of what you think is working and what isn’t.
Section Two
Provide an analysis of how the company represents diversity and inclusion in their corporate branding with an emphasis on their website. Is there a mission statement? Is there anything about their hiring practices? Is it embedded in their values? What are their key messages? How is it featured on the website e.g. prominent v. non-prominent?
Again, what are they doing well and what aren’t they doing well?
Suggest two- three recommendations of what they need to do to improve.
Section 3
Taking into account that you won’t have access to details of the workplace, I want you to come up with five questions for the employees in the organization about how they feel about working in this organization. The key is to ask questions that elicit answers that encourage the employees to open about their experiences of being in the workplace that touch upon the aforementioned concept/theories that are discussed in the module book such as affirmative action, ‘in/out groups,’ ‘micro-aggressions.’
For instance, think about how you can ask a different and indirect way of asking someone how they feel about affirmative action. Avoid asking close ended questions that just elicit ‘yes,’ or ‘no’ answers. E.g. Tell about a time when you disagreed with someone? What do you think about the way the company…? How do you feel about…?
Grading
You will be graded on the quality of your analysis, content, the quality of the presentation, including visual presentation, and professionalism. You and your partner will each need to submit a copy of the presentation in order to have the grades register in Moodle.
