The Primary Source Project Plus essay is not due until April 24, but I thought I would say a few words about it — don’t let the due date sneak up on you. You now have experience summarizing and analyzing primary sources on the discussion board. Each discussion board post is about one single primary source, though. With the PSPP essay, several documents will be under review and comparison in the essay. As always, read the instructions and the sample essay. Your textbook has a Primary Source Project at the end of each chapter. Pick any one that interests you with the exception of PSP #7. Number seven deals with the arguments over the Constitution. Your FDEs already addressed those topics, so I did not want any double-dipping assignments. Each Primary Source Project has between four to six documents that address the same topic. You are to review — that is, summarize, compare, and analyze — each document in the collection. In addition to the five or so sources in the project, you will also use the library’s databases to find one additional primary source outside of the project, and one secondary source. These two additional sources should provide a fuller picture than the sources in the textbook, especially a different point of view about the topic under consideration.

For instance, let’s say that you want to write your essay on Primary Source Project #5 on the Boston Massacre. In your essay, you would summarize and compare William Wyatt’s deposition (Source 5.6), the account of the Boston Massacre funeral procession (Source 5.7), Paul Revere’s etching (Source 5.8), Captain Preston’s account (Source 5.9) and John Adams’s defense of the troops (Source 5.10). Then you would bring in two outside sources, one primary, one secondary. A primary source is like those in the project, a source created or written during the time period under investigation. A secondary source is a scholarly article or book written much later about the event or topic in question.
The publishers have given you access to both volumes of American History, so make sure to pick a project that chronologically aligns with the course: from chapters 1 through 14 (with the exception, again, of PSP 7). I once had a student that picked the project on the atomic bomb — uhm, no, that would be HIS 202.
The essay is to cover the sources in a primary source project at the end of the chapter.
