Application Activity 13
Binocular Vision in Sports
Test the hypothesis that binocular vision improves performance in ball sports. If you have access to sports equipment and can play a sport at home, you may choose to do that for this activity. Otherwise, you can create your own sports scenario with a paper “ball.” Design a test for your sport that can be accomplished with one eye open or both eyes open. For example, you could measure how many successful shots into a goal, passes to another player, hits with a bat (or other club, racket, etc.), or whatever sports skill you can determine. Make sure this is as close to the real sports skill as possible (tossing a ball to someone 6 feet away is not challenging enough). Attempt to play your sport (or sport skill) using both eyes and then with only one eye. Repeat this several times (at least 10 “shots, passes, etc.” for each eye condition, but 20-30 would be better), enough to get a good amount of data.
Write a brief discussion about whether performance is improved with the use of two eyes instead of one. What did you find difficult and why? Besides depth, was tracking motion easier with one eye or two? Why would tracking be easier in one condition over
