This a bridge between The Muscular System and The Nervous System.
Louisa is 32 years old and is busy with her two young children and a part time job tutoring math. As she was driving her children back from school one day, she had to pull over as it seemed that her vision became blurry. After a few deep breaths and a short rest, she noticed that one eye was causing the problem. She covered that eye with her hand and was able to navigate her way home. She breathed a sigh of relief when her vision went back to normal after a couple hours.
For a few weeks, Louisa has been feeling more tired than usual. She has even had to nap sometimes in the afternoon almost collapsing into her bed when she felt like her muscles were so weak that they could no longer support her. Up until now she has chalked this up to her busy schedule and some lack of sleep. At the urging of her husband, she makes an appointment with her physician.
While obtaining additional history, Dr. Mattis discovers that Louisa has had a few times where she was incontinent of urine. She tells Louisa that she would like to run some additional tests and set her up to see a Neurologist. Dr. Mattis is suspicious that Louisa is suffering from MS(Multiple Sclerosis) or a similar condition.
Why is Dr. Mattis suspicious that Louisa has MS? What are some other signs or symptoms that may point to this diagnosis?
What type of disease is MS? What happens on the cellular level to cause the symptoms of MS?
What tests do you think that either Dr. Mattis or the Neurologist will order to confirm the diagnosis? What will they show that would support the diagnosis?
What are some characteristics that make a person more susceptible to developing MS?
Describe what happens on a cellular/molecular level that may explain why some patients with MS have periods of remission when they are essentially symptom free.
What types of treatments are available for MS? What is the mechanism of action of at least one of these ie. how does it work to treat symptoms or the cause of the disease itself? Are there any recent breakthroughs in treatment?
