The past several weeks we have covered several areas of diversity, intercultural communication, intercultural counseling and cultural competence. Drawing on the learning read the scenario given below and answer the questions asked
Sara is a health care professional within the food industry who was recently promoted to lead and manage a team of 15 workers. Of the 15 workers, 3 people are Caucasian, 1 person is an African American female, 7 people are second generation immigrants from Central and South American countries, and 4 people are first generation immigrants from Central and South American countries who speak little English. While most of her staff is between 21 to 45 years old, there is one staff member who is approximately 62 years old.
Although Sara is extremely knowledgeable about her trade, she is having difficulty managing, directing, and communicating with her staff. One of the biggest problems is the language barrier between her and the 4 non-English speaking staff members. This language and culture barrier is also causing problems within the team, who seem to be naturally divided by their race and ethnicity. As a result, the team is not working together and sharing ideas. In addition to these problems, Sara was recently informed that she must recruit and hire 2 new employees to add to her team. It has been specified that these new hires should add more diversity into the company.
