In this assignment, you are required to identify and illustrate an important urban planning, engineering or architectural event, process, or place through a digital archival search. This takes three forms: use of a digital photo or image archive; use of a text-based archive such as newspapers, documents, and other written records; and use of secondary historical accounts, such as published histories or commentaries.
First, choose an urban space, district, or building that you’d like to research in historical detail. Some examples are given in the list below, but you can choose your own:
New York: Grand Central Station; Empire State Building; Times Square, Park Avenue, Central Park, United Nations complex, Lincoln Center.
London: the Barbican; Piccadilly Circus; Euston Station, Buckingham Palace, Heathrow Airport, Soho, Oxford Street.
Sydney: Central Station; the Harbour Bridge; the Domain, the tram network, Bondi Beach.
Los Angeles: movie studios; the Hollywood sign; LA Public Library; Union Station.
Second, undertake some research on a particular theme or idea using (a) a photo archive and (b) a text-based archive, such as a newspaper. It is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the following archives (we will explore them in class in the first few weeks also):
London Metropolitan Archive, and the London Picture Archive;
New York Public Library archive; New York Times digital archive
City of Sydney archive, NSW State Library archive; and Trove.
Los Angeles: LAPL archive.
Third, write your study. You should explain how your chosen space, district or building developed during a particular period of urban planning or design history by making reference to the scholarly literature. You should then choose 5 digital archive images to illustrate it, and approximately 10 references from the text archive. You should also draw on secondary historical accounts to support the discussion.
The assignment should contain the following elements.
An introductory paragraph that briefly describes the chosen building or urban space.
A literature review that contextualises it within a particular framework from planning and design history and/or theory and/or secondary historical account (approximately 600 words).
A methods section which describes the archives that you consulted, and how you located the items, such as the search terms that you used. (approximately 400 words)
An empirical section where you construct a historical account drawing from your images and archival sources. (approximately 800 words)
A short conclusion
A reference list.
There is a 2000 word limit which excludes the reference list. Please give full reference details to a standard where the original image could be easily located (i.e. a unique identifier).
MARKING CRITERIA
Does the study provide a well contextualised narrative or account of a particular place, building or space?
Is there evidence of a significant amount of archival searching and choice of images to support this?
Are the archival sources clearly captioned and referenced?
Is the overall writing style, paragraph structure, titles, and referencing clear, well laid out, and accurate?
