You must use the film, Denial, and two the texts we have read thus far to support your argument.
Denial (Movie link: https://smu.kanopy.com/video/denial)
“Post-Truth” or “The Decline of Traditional Media” (see the PDF on Canvas in “Files”).
Mastermind and/or Critical Thinking
Your topic claims must be supported with evidence from the readings and/or the film through close analytical analysis of the film and/or texts.
In this essay, you are to consider the notions discussed and presented in Critical Thinking, Mastermind, the “Post Truth” and “The Decline of Traditional Media” articles, as well as presented in Denial.
Thus far, we have discussed the commonalities and differences in the role that information and facts play in critical thinking/reasoning today – especially when considering journalism or news, studying the past, or seeking to better present-day and future society.
Drawing from examples discussed in the film about Holocaust denial and antisemitism, as well as the chapters and articles we have read, consider how the pursuit and presentation of information and facts (or “truth”) have shifted between a society reliant on traditional journalism and/or academic research to a society in today’s ‘post-truth’ world. Also, consider the role in which critical reasoning plays in the pursuit of truth.
In your essay, you are to address the following:
Choose a scene from Denial that portrays some of the characteristics of critical thinking and/or addresses logical fallacies, and then, address how or why this scene is applicable to an issue in present day, where misinformation or disinformation are seeking to outshine the “truth” and “facts.”
What role does critically thinking play in deciphering said misinformation or disinformation?
How has social media played a role in “information pollution,” and how does critically thinking and reasoning play a role in giving voice to truth and facts – or in combatting misinformation or disinformation?
Consider using some of the terms and definitions addressed in Mastermind and Critical Thinking when you reflect on what it means to critically think about the information your read and the “news” you come across today. Is all “news” bias or misinformation or disinformation?
Reminder: You must use the film, Denial, and two of the texts we have read thus far to support your argument.
Review these helpful tips from last week’s Writing Activity:
Review this resource in order to familiarize yourself with the terminologies used to understand film: https://writingcenter.unc.edu/tips-and-tools/film-analysis/ (Links to an external site.)
Your paper should be focused on an evaluation and formal analysis of the features and techniques (e.g., mise-en-scène, contextual analysis, cinematography, editing, sound, etc. *see above link for details) that produce film art rather than a summary of the plot.
Of course, it is NOT possible to cover all these elements in your short response; pick one element or a few scenes to analyze how the director captures the portrayal of critical thinking, what does the film have to say about the role of facts in truth in a democracy?
Quote sparingly, but do quote, and use correct in-text citations (MLA Style: https://www.scribbr.com/mla/how-to-cite-a-movie/ (Links to an external site.) )
You may use any of the previous course texts as context for your analysis if you find it useful and appropriate, but do not quote other outside sources beyond the chosen texts in this prompt.
Remember to address the context of the film and how your chosen scene or film element contributes to the larger theme of the prompt.
