Consult the syllabus for font, size, and spacing formatting requirements.

negative effect on the points for this assignment.
Your central tasks in this essay are to select one of the writing options listed below, gather
research, and write an essay that addresses the prompt’s requirements and questions.
OPTION ONE > The Male Body in Culture
and Media
Your work for this option will be to analyze how the male
body is depicted in today’s media/advertising/culture and
form an argument that is supported through your opinion and
research. For example, some experts argue that our media
(television, film, Internet/social media) sells a body standard for
men that can be damaging to both the individual and our shared
culture(s).
The essay will examine and cite evidence from a minimum of
three research sources:
▪ “Gym, eat, repeat: the shocking rise of muscle
dysmorphia” (The Guardian, article URL posted in
Canvas module)
Two more sources that are found online and meet the “suitability standards”
discussed in our library research session. These can be articles that are published in a
magazine, newspaper, government or higher education site, and found in the Bucks
databases. Please feel free to find and use more than three total sources for your work!
▪ You may also use some personal narrative to help illustrate your analysis. While the
essay needs to be research-based, you are welcome to include personal experiences that
aid in supporting the essay’s analytical points.
The essay will present an argument thesis statement that is explored and supported
throughout the paper (review our “Ultimate Guide to Writing Essay One” for in-depth
aid). Some questions to consider that can help you form the argument:
▪ What does the research you have gathered argue about media imagery and male bodies?
Is there a preferred type/types of physicality that is valued over others? Why? Is there a
history behind this imagery?
▪ Do you agree with the research you have studied? Disagree? Do you fall somewhere in
between and can see both sides of what the authors present?
▪ What is at stake? Why should we care about how male bodies are depicted in our media?
Are these images damaging? Why or why not and to whom? Are there differences in how
male and female bodies are handled in advertising and culture? Are these differences
important to consider? Why?
