In case management, advocating for service users is essential. You advocate externally to other agencies and organizations, but you also advocate in every conversation you have with your service user. You advocate for and with them by remaining person-centered and keeping their unique life circumstances at the forefront, empowering them to make decisions, promoting their independence through choice and voice, and always respecting their rights and their dignity.
Last week, you identified barriers for your service user related to achieving their service plan goals. Now you must move from problem to possible solutions. What might help your service user overcome those barriers? Recall the example of Bryon, the service user who needs to attend a regular AA meeting but does not have reliable transportation. To address the transportation barrier, you could explore having a friend or family member provide the ride, offering a voucher for a taxi, or locating a virtual AA meeting Bryon could attend from home.
For this Discussion, imagine you are having a conversation with your service user in which you explain possibilities for overcoming the identified barriers and discuss the ways you may advocate for services.
Recall the barriers you identified in the Week 3 Assignment. Consider how you would help the service user overcome these barriers.

Service User:
Michael (born “Mia”) is a 17-year-old who
identifies as a transgender male. He is a
senior at Hart City High School, where he is
a member of the theater club. The theater
club is small but welcoming. Michael excels
at acting and at set design and sees art as
an escape. Michael is an honor-roll student.
He has one close friend, Aisha, who is also
involved in theater, though she and Michael
do not currently have any classes together.
Outside of theater, Michael is frequently bullied by peers, especially when using the boys’ bathroom. Bullying has occurred off and on since Michael was 6 years old. At that time, he began to think he was different from others and that he didn’t fit his biological makeup.

Michael’s parents are divorced, and he lives with his mother, Courtney. Michael’s dad left 3 years ago, when Michael was 14 and came out as transgender. Michael describes some tension with Courtney because she seems to blame him for his dad leaving. Courtney is trying to support Michael but is not fully behind what she sees as “a choice.” She “misses her girl.” Michael struggles with lack of attachment to his primary caregivers and seeks to fill those gaps with other people he meets online. He has had a few sexual partners, both male and female, and describes himself as pansexual.
You have been working with Michael for
several weeks when you get a call from his
mother, Courtney. Courtney says that she
wants to know what’s going on with Michael.
After school and work, Michael is often out late into the night
and barely divulges anything to her afterward. Courtney is
concerned. At 17. Michael is a minor. but he
is also Independent and highly private. Does
Courtney have a right to be involved in his
case management? How would you handle her request?
